Coming Home To Your Console Table
Share
Before anyone settles into your living room, your entryway has already said hello.
You open the door, drop your keys and set down the day. A bag slips from your shoulder. Shoes come off. For a moment, the outside world stays outside.
It’s an everyday ritual, but the space where it happens deserves a little thought.
Picture a hallway with an empty wall. It does its job, leading you from one room to the next, but it doesn’t quite feel finished. Then a timber console arrives. A ceramic bowl gives your keys a home. A favourite artwork hangs above it. A lamp brings a warm glow to the evening.
The hallway hasn’t grown. Yet somehow, it feels like a whole new space.
That’s what a well-chosen console table can do. More than a surface for the things you carry, it gives your home a point of arrival.
At Lumber Furniture, our console range offers different ways to create that welcome, from the quiet strength of clean-lined solid timber to sculptural pieces with unmistakable presence.
A quiet welcome: Haven
Some rooms don’t need a dramatic gesture. They need a piece that brings everything together.
The Haven Solid Timber Console Table pairs a thick timber top with bold architectural legs. Its clean lines let the natural grain take centre stage, creating a grounded, understated presence.
Imagine it beneath a favourite artwork, with a lamp at one end and a simple bowl at the other. There’s room for personality without needing to fill every centimetre.
At 180cm long, 35cm deep and 80cm high, Haven is worth considering for a generous hallway, a living-room wall or a position behind a sofa. It’s a piece for those who want their home to feel warm and composed rather than heavily styled.
A story in the timber: Bastion
Sometimes, it’s the material itself that makes you stop and look.
The Bastion Solid Timber Beam Console Table is built from reclaimed solid timber beams, stacked into a bold architectural form. Natural cracks, grain movement and aged textures remain visible, allowing the character of the timber to become part of the design.
Those details aren’t something to disguise. They’re the reason to look closer.
With 20cm-thick beams, Bastion brings a substantial presence, while its 28cm depth offers a relatively shallow footprint. At 195cm long and 83cm high, it still needs a wall with room to do it justice.
We’d keep the styling restrained. A single sculptural vessel or a favourite artwork can be enough when the timber already has so much to say.
Furniture as sculpture: Forme
There are spaces where a console does more than finish the room. It defines it.
The Forme Console is composed as a stacked architectural form, with curves and proportions that give it a sculptural presence.
Crafted in solid American Ash with a cognac or black stained finish, Forme brings together the warmth of hardwood and a distinctive silhouette. Its grain and tonal depth respond to changing light, rewarding a second look as you move through the space.
This is a console for someone who sees furniture as part of the architecture of their home. Rather than surrounding it with accessories, give it breathing room.
Forme isn’t designed around storage. Its purpose is presence, making an entryway or corridor feel deliberate from the moment you arrive.
A personal choice: Erskine
Sometimes you know the shape you want, but it’s the timber that makes the piece feel like yours.
The Erskine Timber Mitred Console Table combines a mitred waterfall design with a powder-coated steel base. Handcrafted in our Moorabbin factory, it can be customised with timber choices including Messmate, Blackbutt and Oak.
That choice is a good place to slow down.
Consider the materials already in your home: the floor beneath it, the nearby cabinetry, the colours you return to. You don’t need every timber to match, but you do want them to feel comfortable together.
Erskine offers a way to bring your own preferences into the piece, pairing its modern form with the character of your chosen timber.
Finding the right fit
Before choosing a console, think about how you actually use the space.
Where do you put your keys? Would a lamp make the entrance more inviting in the evening? Is there an artwork you’d love to give a proper home?
Measure the available wall, but also consider depth and movement. A table should feel comfortable to walk past, with room for doorways and the everyday flow of your household.
Then think about the feeling you’re after.
Haven offers quiet strength. Bastion celebrates the texture and presence of reclaimed beams. Forme makes a sculptural statement. Erskine brings timber choice into a clean, mitred design.
The right piece doesn’t have to be the most dramatic one. It’s the one that belongs in your home and makes you glad to see it.
Let the table do some of the work
Once your console is in place, you don’t need much to make it feel lived-in.
Start with something practical, like a bowl for keys. Add light if the space needs it. Then choose one personal detail: a ceramic piece, a framed photograph or branches gathered from the garden.
Leave some of the surface clear. Beautiful timber deserves to be seen, and a little empty space makes the objects you love stand out.
After all, this isn’t a showroom arrangement you have to preserve. It’s part of your home, ready for the keys, flowers and small moments that arrive with you.
A place to come home to
A console table won’t change the day you’ve had. But it can change the way your home welcomes you at the end of it.
It can turn an overlooked wall into a favourite corner. Give everyday objects a place. Bring warmth, character and a sense of intention to the rooms you move through most.
Whether you’re drawn to something understated, richly textured or sculptural, begin with one question:
How do you want to feel when you walk through the door?
