Crafting Custom Timber Dining Tables in Melbourne
Share
Handmade furniture isn’t just about wood and tools. It’s about passion, precision, and a story that starts with raw timber and ends with a masterpiece.
At Lumber Furniture, we recently had the pleasure of creating two breathtaking custom timber square dining tables for two of our clients—Tony & Angela, and Frank.
These tables were more than just furniture. They were centrepieces for their homes, designed to bring people together, share meals, and create lifelong memories.
Meet the Clients: Tony, Angela, and Frank
- Tony & Angela wanted a Belize Square Dining Table—a modern rectangle dining table with rounded corners, made from rich American Black Walnut.

- Frank had a vision for a Kyoto Flute Square Dining Table, featuring a Messmate tabletop with soft grain and vertical fluted panel legs for a striking, sculptural look. Size: 1.8m W x 2.1m L

Step 1: Choosing the Right Timber – The Heart of Every Table
Every great table starts with selecting the perfect timber. This step is critical. Why? Because timber isn’t just wood—it’s the soul of the table.
The Belize Square Dining Table: Rich, Elegant Walnut
Tony & Angela’s table needed a sophisticated and timeless feel. American Black Walnut was the perfect choice.
- Deep, rich brown tones with natural grain variations
- Strong and durable, perfect for daily use
- A luxurious feel, making every meal feel special

The Kyoto Flute Dining Table: Warm, Natural Messmate
Frank’s table needed to be a statement piece—bold yet inviting. Messmate was the winner.
- Aussie-grown hardwood with stunning character
- Medium feature grain, adding warmth without being overpowering
- Durable and strong, built to last for generations
We carefully hand-selected every plank, ensuring consistency in colour and grain. No two pieces of timber are ever the same, making each table truly one of a kind.

Step 2: Crafting the Table Legs – A Work of Art
Most people focus on the tabletop. But the legs?
That’s where the magic happens.

Belize Square Dining Table – Solid Timber Legs
For Tony & Angela’s table, we created stained black thick, sturdy timber legs that complemented the walnut top.
- Carefully cut and shaped for balance and support
- Rounded edges to soften the design
- Seamless joinery for a high-end finish

Kyoto Fluted Panel Table – A Sculptural Statement
Frank’s table needed vertical fluted panel legs, requiring meticulous shaping and detailing.

- Each fluted panel was precisely cut for uniformity
- Sanding and finishing to bring out the natural grain
- Structural reinforcement underneath to ensure long-term durability
This stage required absolute patience. Every millimetre mattered. A small mistake could mean starting over.

Step 3: Crafting the Tabletop – Where Beauty Meets Strength
A table’s top is what everyone sees, touches, and admires. It had to be perfect.
Belize Tabletop – Sleek and Refined
Tony & Angela’s 3cm thick Black Walnut tabletop was all about elegance.
- Rounded corners for a soft, modern touch

- Silky smooth sanding for a flawless feel
- Custom finishing to enhance the natural grain

Kyoto Tabletop – Bold and Beautiful
Frank’s 4cm thick Messmate tabletop needed to be both stunning and strong.
- Gently rounded corners for a modern aesthetic
- Full support frame underneath for stability
- Hand-finished to highlight natural grain patterns
These details might seem small, but they make all the difference in premium craftsmanship.

Step 4: Sanding, Finishing, and Protecting
Once the tables were built, it was time for finishing touches.
- Every inch was hand-sanded for a smooth feel
- A protective finish was applied to enhance durability
- Final quality checks ensured perfection before delivery
The result? Tables that look and feel incredible—not just today, but for decades to come.

Step 5: Delivery Day – The Best Part of the Job
After weeks of hard work, it was time to deliver these masterpieces.

Frank stood back and admired his Kyoto table.
“We are over the moon. It looks absolutely spectacular"

Moments like these make everything worth it.
